Welcome to 25 Days of Giving 2013!
For the past two years I’ve participated in 25 Days of Giving with my best friend, Stephanie. Last year two more friends joined us, and are doing it again this year as well! The idea is that every day, starting December 1st, we give. Money, time, material donations, letters, Secret Neighborhood Elf notes. Whatever works! It’s a great way to slow down the holidays by focusing on people who need stuff more than you do. I’ve had such a blast the last two years, and have really enjoyed learning about new programs and charities, and have even continued volunteering for several of them year-round.
The number one priority on my list this year is Adopt a Family. Last year for one of my days of giving I adopted a family through Compass Family Services, a non-profit in San Francisco that provides support to homeless families. Together with my husband we recruited friends and family to make our adopted family’s holiday wishes come true, and we were totally blown away by the generosity of our community, with over 25 people/families donating over $700 in cash and around $500 worth of gifts. Amazing!
This year we decided to adopt two families and have been slowly recruiting friends and family to join us. So far we’ve been blown away by the generosity of everyone who wants to be involved.
One of our families includes a single mom and her two sons, one of whom is 17 years old and about to be the first high school graduate –ever– in their family. Mom’s big request for her family is a $100 Visa gift card to go towards a tux rental for her son’s prom. She wants to make it a special night for him, which he definitely deserves!
The second family is two parents with a young daughter, trying to get back on their feet. I love that by working together we’re able to provide a special day during what can be a really tough season when you’re struggling.
We’re still looking for some gifts that need to be fulfilled.
– Safeway gift cards – $75 for each family
– $100 gift card for a tuxedo rental for the son’s prom
– SF 49er’s jacket
– dart board & darts
If anyone is interested in helping out, you can view the wish lists here and sign your name next to the gift that you’d like to donate. Or if you’d like to donate cash to go towards gifts and gift cards for the families, you can send it via PayPal to laura.m.sherr AT gmail DOT com.
Thank you in advance for your generosity!!
Since there’s an immense amount of legwork that goes into Adopt a Family I decided that I would use this as several of my Days of Giving this year, though I’ve had a hard time turning down other giving opportunities nearly every day. With so much going on, I decided not to blog every day about my activity, but will check in every few days to talk about what I’m up to, and update on Adopt a Family.
Here are some of the other ways that I’ve given so far this month:
Day 1: donated $ during checkout at Pet Food Express towards their Giving Tree program that supports local animal shelters
Day 2: emailed limo companies asking for donations for the son’s prom
Day 3: sent in a donation and decorated place mat to Meals on Wheels, which delivers food to elderly persons
Day 4: donated to a friend’s Polar Bear Plunge
