OFFICIAL COUNTDOWN: 12 Days until Christmas!!!!
The San Francisco Food Bank is fairly infamous around these parts for their well-organized and surprisingly fun volunteer opportunities. Each year they have 22,000 unique volunteers. That is mind-boggling! They always book up fairly fast, especially their only weekday 6-8pm shift on Wednesdays, so I jumped the gun and booked a group reservation back in early November to make sure we got an evening shift.
A group of seven of us went over tonight and packed up 1-lb bags of rice. The room was pretty packed, and all together we packed 3,780 pounds of rice. That’s amazing! To put it into perspective, one pound feeds a family of four for an entire meal.
That’s actually one thing I really love about volunteering at the Food Bank. Not only is the Food Bank organized and efficient, and the work surprisingly laid-back and soothing, but by the time you leave you know the exact impact you had in numbers. Our group of 7 packed something around 500 pounds of rice – that’s one meal for 2,000 people! That doesn’t even seem real.
I can’t thank my little group enough for coming out to support the Food Bank and joining me in my 25 Days of Giving! Huge thanks to Sarah, Leslie, Andrea, Aparna, Jeff, and Ian. You guys are the best!
If you’d like to contribute to the Food Bank and can’t get over there, you can either donate cash via their website, or you can look for their End Hunger bins set up around the city. At Safeway you can buy a $10 bag of groceries to drop right into the bin – they’re pre-assembled for you with the foods they need most.
