Today was a super easy day of giving for me, since I had my already-scheduled weekly tutoring session with Reading Partners. As I mentioned back on Day 1, every Thursday I spend an hour with a 3rd grader at a local elementary school, working with her on her reading skills.
Today we were preparing for next week’s Reading Recital, at which she will be reciting a short excerpt from her favorite book, Judy Moody. After all of her groaning about not liking chapter books, I was amused when she brought in Judy Moody, which is definitely a longer chapter book, as her favorite book. Busted, kid. After ignoring her while she tried to convince me of her debilitating stage fright, I helped her write out her excerpt, and then we spent the rest of the time practicing reading out loud. She is way too sassy to have stage fright, which I told her, and to be honest, she did a great job reading her passage out loud. I think she’ll be awesome next week! I’ll be so proud. <tear>
I know I said it last week, but I’ve really enjoyed being a Reading Partner for the past three months, and if you’re in San Francisco, it’s definitely a great volunteer opportunity. Minimal commitment but huge reward. Also, I’d like to give her a book next week as her end-of-semester gift, so if you have any suggestions for a great book at the 3rd grade reading level, leave it in the comments!
I’ve got some fun volunteer activities lined up for tomorrow and Saturday, so stay tuned for more giving!
