***6 Days ‘Til Christmas!!!***
We are getting down to the wire here! I was pretty excited but also a little apprehensive about my 19th Day of Giving. I had scheduled to do gift wrapping for the afternoon for a charity across town. The other two times I had signed up to do gift wrapping, there weren’t any gifts to be wrapped, so I ended up tying ribbon on calendars, or decorating gift bags. So I was wasn’t sure if I should even expect to do gift wrapping today!
However, when I arrived at the Florence Crittenton house, I found a huge room full of toys, books, stuffed animals, children’s clothing, and tons and tons of gift wrap. I found some scissors and tape and spent the next four hours wrapping gift after gift. Four hours if a long time to volunteer doing gift wrapping, and I have to admit, I was a little stressed out about the time commitment since I have so much left to do before my flight on Wednesday. However, it was really therapeutic, and it felt really good knowing that each gift was going to an underserved child. It was well worth the time. The best part was my friend Aparna left work early to come help out, so I had a pal to chat with and pass the time! I love how many people have joined me in Giving – it’s been such fun!
Florence Crittenton Services (FCS) has been around in San Francisco since the late 1800s. It started out as a house to serve unwed pregnant women, and has evolved with the times to continue serving the needs of the community. Now they provide “high-quality child care and development services; job support, training, and placement for adults; and comprehensive family services and referrals.” So basically they help lower-income families become self-sufficient (placing them in jobs) while making sure their kids have a safe place to learn and develop.
In the new year, I’ll definitely look into longer term volunteer opportunities with them. They seem like a really great, well-organized non-profit, and I’d love to work with them further.
Now back to Christmas gift creating and wrapping and baking… like a maniac! Only 6 days! EEP!!!
Want to Join Me in Giving? Sign up for a local gift-wrapping service. Most of them donate their proceeds to a charity, and spending two hours wrapping gifts at the mall is one of the easiest things you can do this year. Plus then you’re already at the mall so you can run out and finish your last-minute shopping!
