***11 Days ’til Christmas!!!***
In a week Ian and I will be headed back to the East Coast for the holidays. We’re really looking forward to 10 days of hanging out at my parent’s house by the fireplace and doing some giving East Coast style.
Today was another super fun Day of Giving. The weekly tutoring program that I’ve told you about here and here held their Winter Reading Recital today. The student who I tutor was super nervous, but we spent last week practicing her reading selection, and she totally nailed it today! I was so proud. When I arrived at the cafeteria for the recital, she was super excited to see me, yelling my name and jumping on me as I walked up to her. Since I was sorta unconvinced up until that point that she even knew my name, I was totally excited! She’s worked so hard this semester, and watching her do her reading was really awesome. Tomorrow is our last tutoring session for the semester. It flew by!
One of the cool things about Reading Partners is that they let the students take home books to read, and then the student gets to keep the book forever. It’s a great way to get books into the homes of kids who might not otherwise own them. So today I brought a few books that I picked up at some thrift stores around town, including two of my favorites when I was a kid: The Secret Garden, and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I hope that whichever kid who ends up taking them home enjoys them as much as I did when I was younger (actually I recently re-read The Secret Garden and I still thought it was wonderful)!
